Ben hails from Obudu, Cross River State. After his secondary education at Government Secondary School, Obudu, he proceeded to Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma where he earned his B.Sc. (Honours) in Microbiology and subsequently a Ph.D from the University of Ibadan (1990 - 1994) winning the Doctoral Dissertation Award in Environmental Microbiology.
Ben took up an appointment as a lecturer at Delta State University, Abraka where he was subsequently appointed Professor.
Through his research work in groundwater remediation in Nigeria, he invented a sewage treatment plant powered by solar energy.
